The WESSA Young Reporters for the Environment programme implementation kicked off this month. YRE creates a productive space for young reporters to reimagine and craft a social and environmentally just future, which is key to sustainability.
With our partnership with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) we hope to equip the young reporters to include the 2020 CDW themes into their investigations to see how their communities are affected and then report on that.
Through these engagements, the young reporters will also compile pieces to take part in the 2021 Young Researchers Symposium and other collaborative dialogues and sessions organized by SAIIA.
In workshop 1, Climate change adaption and mitigation strategies in Gauteng communities, the young reporters from the Gauteng schools shared their concerns and ideas on how we could possibly begin to combat climate change in their communities. The learners completed a visualization exercise in which they drew the world as they see it now, how they would like to see it in 50 years, and discussed what can be done now to build that future.
